Terra Madre

The English edition of Slow Food president and founder Carlo Petrini’s new book Terra Madre: Forging a New Global Network of Sustainable Food Communities, was released last week in the USA during his short tour of the country.

In Terra Madre, Petrini tells us that on a global scale, we aren’t eating food. Food is eating us. Inspired by the Terra Madre network of food communities, Petrini’s solution to the problems of large-scale industrial agriculture lie in the thousands of newly-formed local alliances between food producers and food consumers. He proposes expanding these alliances – connecting regional food communities around the world to promote good, clean, and fair food. The end goal is a world in which communities are entitled to choose not only what they want to grow and eat, but also how they produce and distribute it.

“When the world’s food traditions come together at Terra Madre, we catch a glimpse of what it would be like to exchange, learn, share and widen our lives in ways that are truly sustainable. In this fine manifesto, Carlo Petrini captures the essence of that world, and offers an agenda for change that is both necessary and deeply desirable.”

Raj Patel, author of The Value of Nothing

“No one writes about the intersection of eating and thinking quite like Carlo Petrini. A visionary equally mindful of past and present, he points readers toward a food system, and a way of life, that just might save us from ecological and cultural disaster. Persuasive, powerful, and – perhaps above all else – unapologetically honest, Petrini has given us a manual for a better, more delicious future. It’s up to us to use it.”
