European policies affect us all. Lets get them right!

Slow Food is calling for a more holistic EU food and farming policy that protects traditional foods and small-scale farmers in the face of a rapidly transforming continent. We are actively engaged in debate and campaigning on the issues that will define the future of food in Europe.

The European Union represents half a billion citizens in 28 countries. It is responsible for many policies that will shape the future of food on the continent; most significantly the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP).

At European level, different elements of the food system are currently separately regulated by different policies and by different authorities, often with contradicting results. Slow Food believes this must change, recognizing the overlap between the different aspects of the food chain. Slow Food is calling for a shift towards an EU Common Sustainable Food Policy to enable a more holistic approach to our food, our environment, our health and our farmers at the European level.

In 2013 Slow Food opened an office in Brussels to ensure stronger collaboration with other civil society networks working on similar issues (e.g. bees, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, animal welfare, climate change), enable closer monitoring of European policy development and provide proximity to political consultations.
