Slow Food in Canada Holds this Year’s National Meeting from April 22-26 in Montreal under the Themes of Food Biodiversity and the Ark of Taste

From April 22 to the 26, Slow Food in Canada holds the National Meeting of the Canadian Slow Food convivia in the presence of Carlo Petrini, founder and president of Slow Food International, and Richard McCarthy, CEO of Slow Food USA. At the same time, Montreal will be hosting Terra Madre St. Lawrence, a national forum aiming to showcase the food communities of Quebec and Canada.

The event will offer an array of activities and exchange opportunities for participants under the themes of food biodiversity and connection to the land, while celebrating products of the Canadian Ark of Taste and discuss major issues such as sustainable fishing and food waste.

While the event welcomes current members of Slow Food and other NGOs, several activities will also be open to the public, including:

              The Salon du gout de Montréal, where visitors can enjoy delicious products reflecting the local biodiversity and food heritage, meet producers and participate in taste workshops;

              The Disco Soup, which aims to transform vegetables from local farms and markets that would normally be sent to waste into a giant community meal;

              L’Espace Françoise Kayler, where participants will be invited to discuss the theme “The links of agro biodiversity and health of the soils”; and

              The Biodiversity Gala, which will recognize various individuals and organizations that have contributed to save and promote food biodiversity over the past two years.

This year again, Slow Food in Canada will crown five Canadian Food Heroes, a title given to those who protect, defend and promote sustainable, good, clean and fair food by actively and positively contributing to the food system and preserving the rich history food of their region. In 2014, Slow Food Canada has recognized Ghislain Trudel (Quebec), Robert Clark (British Columbia), Josh Oulton and Patricia Bishop (Nova Scotia), Really Local Harvest (New Brunswick), Tony and Penny Marshall (Prairies) and Paul Finklestein (Ontario).
