A strong delegation from Australia at Terra Madre Salone del Gusto

The 14th edition of Terra Madre Salone del Gusto will take place in Turin from September 22-26, 2022. Terra Madre, the largest gathering of the Slow Food network, aims at designing a different future for food, a future that takes shape through the daily choices of individuals, in the collective efforts of communities, and in the policies of both public and private institutions. Over 3000 delegates from 130 countries and more than 600 exhibitors will participate to the event.

Slow Food’s delegation from Australia consists of about 17 people. A diverse group of family farmers, producers, chefs, academics, activists from the Slow Food Youth Network (SFYN) from all around the country are eagerly awaiting the event.

On Thursday, September 22 at 12 p.m. at the Gino Strada Arena there will be the forum Silent Spring, titled in honour of Rachel Carson, author of the masterpiece Silent Spring. What Carson did was, first and foremost, reveal connections, chains. She discovered that, often, a product is not only poisonous to the insects it is supposed to kill, but also to crops, to soil, to other animals, to human health.

Yet, even today, pesticide use is growing. Between 1990 and 2019, the amount of pesticides used worldwide doubled. The top seller is glyphosate, classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as “probably carcinogenic.” The first victims are pollinators, then soil, water, our health. The meeting will be moderated by Amorelle Dempster, Coordinator of the Maitland Earth Market and member of the Slow Food International Board of Arbitrators.

On Saturday, September 24 at 2 p.m. at the RegenerAction area Di Seels from the Slow Food Noosa convivium and one of the coordinator of the local Slow Food Snail Kids project, will guide the public through an interactive education activity with mushrooms. Di Seels, a medical scientist, outdoor education specialist and researcher, will lead the workshop together with Scott Andrews, local mushroom producer from Tagigan Rd and Slow Food activist.

Also on Saturday, September 24 at 2 p.m. at the Berta Cáceres Arena, Marcus Bridges from Tamburlaine Organic Wines Australia will participate in the forum International wines experimenting with new traditions.

On Sunday, September 25 at 11 a.m. at the Gino Strada Arena there will be a forum called There is no alternative to agroecology. The only way possible to overturn a food system that is impoverishing and polluting natural resources (starting with water and the soil) and ensure peoples’ food sovereignty is agroecology; this is a set of agricultural practices but also a vision and a movement that focuses on biodiversity, the conservation of ecosystems, and the skills and needs of communities. Among the speakers there will be Randal Breen and Juanita Maree, regenerative farmers from Brisbane, who will share their experiences in the field of regenerative farming.

On Sunday, September 25 at 6 p.m. at the Gino Strada Arena there will be a forum to explore the development of The Earth Markets Network, with Amorelle Dempster, Coordinator of the Maitland Earth Market and member of the Slow Food International Board of Arbitrators, as well as a number of Earth Market coordinators from around the world.
